Skaftafell West Circle Route
The Skaftafell is a National Park close to the mighty Vatnajökull glacier. Hiking in the Skaftafell area in Iceland offers a wide range of scenic trails and challenging hikes through some of the country's most beautiful and rugged landscape. Located in the southeastern part of the country, the Skaftafell area is part of the Vatnajökull National Park and is known for its glaciers, waterfalls, and mountains. One popular hiking trail in the area is the Skaftafell Trail, which takes you through a variety of landscapes, including forests, meadows, and glacial valleys. The trail offers several shorter loops and side trails, as well as the option to continue on to the nearby Svartifoss waterfall. Another popular hike in the area is the trail to the top of Kristínartindar mountain, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. When hiking in the Skaftafell area, it is important to come prepared with the right gear and supplies, including proper clothing, water, and snacks.
Several glaciers are close, such as the Skaftajökull and Svínafellsjökull. Inside the National Park, you can find the Svartifoss waterfall which drops among impressive basalt columns, remains of volcanic activity. The West Circle Hike is signposted throughout with the blue "M3" sign. You will encounter forest, pure glacial water streams, stunning views over the flood plains to the ocean and impressive sight of several glaciers. The nearby camp site is very well maintained and a good starting point for tours!
